Mary's Chapel Detailed History Page

In the Spring of 1889, under a shelter made of brush, near Hobbs' Mill, which was located behind our church property, our church was started. G.W. Hobbs and Mary Hobbs felt there was a need in this community for a Baptist Church. They gave the land to build our church. It was named Mary's Chapel after Mrs. Mary Hobbs. It was chartered in the Fall of 1889 and joined the Eastern Association on August 18, 1889. Our first pastor was J.W. Bell. He was pastor from 1889 to 1898.

The first funeral held at Mary's Chapel was that of Mary Frances Westbrook McCullen on September 30, 1901.

In 1901, our church changed to the South River Baptist Association. There are church minutes in that association from 1901 to 1916. From 1916 to 1920 there is no history in either association for our church. It has be en told that our church was closed for that period of time. The association records show it was reorganized in 1920. The pastor was R. T. Hood. We were transferred to the New South River Baptist Association at that time. There are records in the associational minutes from 1920 to 1952, but none to compare with the records of 1952 and after.

Rev. Roger Jackson became our pastor in 1951. During that time he led our church in a great building project. We added and educational wing and renovated our sanctuary.

Our church membership had remained content for approximately 50 years, but in October of 1955, we had a revival that stirred up many people. Many were saved and united with the church. The largest number to be added to the church at one time by baptismal was 29. The first wedding performed was in 1956 by Rev. Jackson. Julia Ellen Harris and Robby Raynor were married following the worship service on November 25, 1956. Rev. Jackson chose to leave our church in December of 1956

Rev. Gibson Lockerman came to our church in January of 1957. He served our church for seventeen years and nine months. This was the longest pastorate in our church's history. He retired on September 29, 1974.

In the 60's we had another large building project. We remodeled our church and added bathrooms. In the 70's we had another building project. Our church was completely renovated during the Summer of 1971. Our Fellowship Hall was started in the Summer of 1972. Our first meeting was held in it on August 3, 1973. It was a baby shower for the mother-to-be, Judith Warren.

The Rev. James G. Knox, III became our pastor on October 6, 1974. He remained there until May 30, 1982. During his pastorate, we had a young man from our church called into the ministry. He is Rev. Jerry Parsons. He has now graduated and is in the ministry full time.

We completed our fellowship hall, placed a Baptistry in our church, conferred the honorary Doctor of Divinity degree upon two former pastors, Rev. Gibson Lockerman and Rev. Roger Jackson. Rev. Knox helped us to work on home missions as well as foreign missions.

On August 31, 1982 our church called Rev. John Oliver. He stayed until 1985. We bought a mobile home to be used as a parsonage. This was the first time we had a full time pastor living in our community.

In 1985 our church called back as interim pastor a former pastor, Rev. Roger Jackson. He stayed for 3 years. I feel we could call him our full time pastor during that time, don't you?

January 1, 1989, our church called Rev. David Willis as our full time pastor. We are now enjoying him and his wife, Cathy. They also live in our parsonage.

Some of the things of interest found in our history are:
  1. There has been a period of only 6 years out of 100 years that our church has not had a regular pastor.
  2. We had a missionary come out of our church about 1941. He was Fernie Naylor and was a missionary to the Phillipines.
  3. In reviewing the church books, we find that in the 50's we sold eggs, chickens, corn, cotton, etc., to pay our pastor and to keep our church bills paid.
  4. In 1943, our records show that we gave a mission offering of $2.00. We paid our pastor $42.00 a month and gave him food and supplies.
  5. In the earlier years of our church, we had no piano, so Mr. Palmer Barefoot started our congregation with a tuning fork. He, his sister Sara, and other family members were very talented in the field of music.
  6. Mrs. Vivvie Warren served our church for 35 years as church clerk. Our church honored her in 1975 for her service.
  7. Mr. Ernie Tyndall, Jr. has served our church for 32 years as superintendent. Before that he was Training Union Director. He has served as Deacon, Sunday School teacher and many other responsibilities.
  8. Mrs. Judith Warren served this church as church treasurer from 1963 to 1983 and church historian from 1972 and is church historian at this time. She was honored with a silver tray in October of 1983 for her service to the church.
  9. Our oldest female member at this time appears to be Mrs. Pearl Daughtry She became a member as well as a church officer and Sunday School teacher in 1927.
  10. Our oldest male member at this time appears to be Mr. Frank Bland. He came to our church community in 1933. He has been active as a Sunday School teacher and church officer.
  11. Mrs. Hattie Warren was born in this church community in 1919 and became a member of the church in 1933. She has served this church with many types of responsibilities since that time. She has been a church officer, Sunday School Teacher, WMU President, etc.

           Respectfully submitted,
